- As I was East on this deal, I was fortunate that South uncharacteristically
- missed this one, though he was quick to recognize the error afterward. No
- one has yet pointed out that West blundered in playing the 9 instead of the
- ten. That would give South a more difficult problem, but I think it's
- still correct to play the King if West is an expert. Assuming expert
- defense, the 10-spot is a mandatory play from 10/9 and from Q10. East's
- play of the 8 from Q/8 is also forced, however, from 9/8 the play is
- essentially random. This looks to me like another application of restricted
- choice, making the odds roughly 2:1 in favor of trying to drop the Queen.
- Of course, against less-than-expert defense, it's probably right to finesse
- if West plays the 10-spot.
