- The Coast Guard originated before the Navy was formed as operators
- of "Revenue Cutters," fast cutters to chase down rum smugglers from
- the Caribbean trying to evade the import tax. They took on search and
- rescue, aids to navigation, etc. as natural extensions to their role
- in "Guarding our Coastline."
- Every time I have heard a senior coast guard official speak at a
- mostly Navy function he/she has started by pointing out that the Coast
- Guard is the oldest armed service in the country. It always gets a
- good laugh from the Navy people.
