  25. First, we race officials write down only lap numbers, rider numbers
  26. and times.  No telephone numbers, especially not with my wife also
  27. sitting on the judging stand.  Second, I did not state, nor did I
  28. intend to imply, that Ms. St. James was at the Vail stage.  No self-
  29. respecting affiliate of the leftist Celestial Seasonings Tea Company
  30. would be caught dead in that hotbed of Republicanism.

  34.    of counterculture types like we cyclists were in those days before Greg
  35.    Lemond and the LA Olympics.

  37. In fact, Greg rode the Red Zinger the year before, in 1979, when he
  38. was still a Junior.  He also crashed on two occasions in that race
  39. after breaking away because he had not yet mastered the art of turning
  40. his head, to see if anyone was following, without also twisting his
  41. handlebars.  Rather embarrassing.

  43.    I have always wondered Les, how Roger Young managed to talk you guys
  44.    (officials) into letting him back into the race after sitting out
  45.    nearly a dozen laps (of a miss and out no less) after his crash.  Can
  46.    you fill me in on this?

  48. Hmm.  I believe that Roger M. is talking here about the 1978 Red Zinger,
  49. which was the only time that a miss-and-out stage was held in Vail.
  50. (It appears that Roger's memory is even worse than mine.)

  52. In any case, only one official called the misses in that event and it
  53. wasn't me, so I can't comment on the alleged laxity.  As I recall, it
  54. was Yvonne VanGent, who is still the Colorado district rep.

  56. I've outlined a longer article on the 1978 Red Zinger, which was much
  57. more screwed up than the later editions and therefore more
  58. interesting.  I'll try to finish and post it sometime next year.
