After the initial difficult shift, the car shifts to the third and fourth gears without any difficulty.

I don't know alot about automatics, but my Maxima (87 75K) is the same
way. It doesn't take a mile to warm up, but may take a couple of
blocks to get into 3rd.
On the same subject, my Maxima has hard shifts at low to moderate
acceleration. Especially 'coasting' from 1st to 2nd. I expect
I will be needing some type of tranny work, but can anyone give me
some ideas on what and how much ($$)? It's a 4speed overdrive with
electronic torque converter lock-up.
Thanks.
