  12. Hi ,
  13.     I have a strange problem with my 1980 Volvo DL, The sequence
  14. of events is as follows:
  15.  
  16.     Over a few weeks I have noticed the dash lights flicker at
  17.     random, intermittently and then disappear, this I attributed
  18.     to loose wiring harness etc:-

  20.     Three days ago it was wet and cold (Dallas) and the car got a 
  21.     soaking to the bone!! Then the problems started:-

  23.     The engine cut out after driving 2 mi in the morning and had to
  24.     be jump started. However it just needed a touch from the jumper
  25.     cables to start (1 second or so).

  27.     I drove 20 mi to school and parked. All well in the evening when
  28.     I started and THEN suddenly the engine died after 1-2 mi.
  29.  
  30.     Again jumped but then the following has been reccurring:
  31.         a)    needs just a touch of the cable clips to start
  32.         b)    Dies as soon (30 sec) of jumper removal
  33.     I also had the battery recharged and the engine started on the
  34.     first turn and drove beautifully for 20 mi. Then I parked it
  35.     overnight. Morning (cold) started fine drove 2 mi then same
  36.     problems started again. Since then I have just kept it garaged.

  38. Any advice, ???
  39.     My guess is there is something wrong with the earthing , or maybe 
  40.     the alternator is not taking over when the engine starts, but the
  41.     drivebelt seems fine (havent checked alternator o/p yet) can
  42.     someone give me some pointers??
