- I have been working with a pair of old Bigg of California 50W tube power
- amps. I am simply rebuilding them to the original schematic using high quality
- components and a solid state power supply. With much better supply filtering
- as well.
- I am lucky enough to have easy access to the Audio Precision measurement
- system and will test both as soon as they are done. We did some testing on
- the first one after I finished and the results look very promising! Proof will
- be in the listening.
- The question I have is with the driver stage.
- These are "advertised" as williamson amps. However, after reading the Glass
- Audio article on the Curcio moded Dynaco ST-70, I see that the williamson
- approach may not be the best sonically.
- If someone would take the time to explain the alternate approaches to the
- driver stage section, I would be able to try some different approaches with
- these amps. And I could measure the effects on distortion, response, etc.
-
- Also, I found a disabled HH Scott integrated amp lurking in a pile of
- assorted earlier years stuff in my closet. Worthless due to it's condition
- with the exception of the output transformers. This amp looks to have been
- about 40W per channel and the transformer have alot of iron. Much larger
- than say a ST-70 transformer. Output tubes were 7591's and were not in the
- ultralinear mode.
- Anyone know about the quality of these x-formers?
-
- Thanks and Merry Christmas everyone!
