- GUIDING LIGHT
- Update for Thursday, December 17, 1992
-
- At WSPR
-
- Fletcher probes Nick for anything Ross might have said in
- the interview off the record. Nick says there were one or
- two things. Fletcher says he knew Ross wouldn't resign
- for Blake. Nick says he doesn't know; Ross looked
- awfully happy. He'd give it up in a heartbeat if he could
- be that happy.
-
- The Boarding House
-
- Eve comes home, singing Christmas carols. Julie hears
- her come in and knocks on her door. She wants to talk
- about Christmas. Eve is liberating a brand new little black
- dress from a garment bag. Julie asks what it's for; Eve
- says she's got a date with Nick. Julie says she has some
- extra mistletoe and offers to bring it over. Eve says she
- doesn't think it'll be that kind of date. "On the other
- hand," she says after a moment's consideration, "if it's
- extra, why not?"
-
- The Towers
-
- Hamp talks to Billy at the bar. Billy is stuffing his face
- with mixed nuts. They commiserate about their spouses
- and how they can't seem to say anything right.
-
- At Nadine's
-
- Nadine comes home, fuming about Billy and Vanessa.
- She calls Vanessa's office looking for Bridget, and finds
- out Bridget went home with Maureen. "Oh, no," Nadine
- whispers.
-
- Ed and Maureen's
-
- Maureen is arguing with Bridget. She doesn't understand
- why Bridget would want to go all the way to Appalachia to
- spend Christmas with people she doesn't even know when
- her own family is coming to Springfield for Christmas.
- It's a school project, Bridget protests weakly. Maureen
- thinks something's going on - and Bridget isn't leaving the
- house without telling.
-
- The Boarding House
-
- Julie returns with the mistletoe and asks Eve for advice
- about a gift for Dylan. Eve suggests something subtle
- and not too expensive. Julie frets about her insecurity - if
- only she knew how much he loved her - more or less than
- she loves him. She wants some kind of sign. Eve agrees;
- all it takes is a sign.
-
- Ed and Maureen's
-
- Bridget reluctantly tells Maureen she's flunking American
- Studies and this is the only way she can pass. Maureen
- blows up - she knew this would happen if Bridget lived
- with Nadine. Bridget says it's okay, though - Nadine
- won't be able to work much longer, and then she won't
- need an assistant anymore. Maureen asks what Bridget
- will be doing in Appalachia. Bridget says she'll be
- cooking, cleaning, and looking after the kids. But that's
- what she did in Flint, Maureen points out, and she hated
- it.
-
- The phone rings; it's Nadine. Maureen tries to put her
- off, but Nadine persists and Maureen gives the phone to
- Bridget. Nadine hisses at Bridget for going home with
- Maureen and tells her not to take off her coat, and to make
- an excuse and get out. Maureen takes the phone away
- from Bridget and tells Nadine Bridget is staying for
- dinner; she'll call again later. Maureen hangs up. Nadine
- is worried.
-
- The Towers
-
- Billy and Hamp are grousing about Ross. They were
- counting on him for the zoning, and now their future
- depends on who gets the appointment. Billy laughs and
- says their wives are mad because they're always mixing
- business with pleasure. Hamp says that's ironic; Gilly
- always tunes him out when she's thinking about work,
- which is most of the time now. Billy says he was just
- talking business with Vanessa and Nadine came in and
- blew up.
-
- Dylan comes up to deliver contracts to Billy and starts to
- leave; Billy stops him and asks him to stay. "I can't,"
- Dylan says. Billy asks if he has a date. "I'll be lucky if
- she ever talks to me again," Dylan tells him. Billy
- apologizes for his behavior - he knows it's wrong to
- bulldoze people you love in the name of a deal. Dylan
- accepts the apology, and says he still feels bad for losing
- the deal. Billy tells him there'll be other deals; Dylan just
- learned a lesson about priorities. Dylan says Julie will
- always come first. Billy says he ought to tell her that.
- Dylan smiles.
-
- The Boarding House
-
- Julie is trying to think of gift ideas. A tie? Too dull.
- Jewelry? He's not the type. Silk boxers? He's opening it
- in front of his family. Julie asks what Eve's given Nick
- that he's liked. Eve reminisces about a New Years Eve
- night at a hotel in the Italian Alps - swimming in the
- heated pool, room service (lobster and champagne),
- missing the midnight hour. Julie suggests Eve give him
- the same thing this year. Eve says their relationship isn't
- like that anymore. Julie says it could be, if Eve gives
- Nick the right gift.
-
- At WSPR
-
- Nick tells Fletcher there's still nothing on who's being
- picked to replace Ross. Fletcher is angry - he believes
- Blake is only looking out for Number One. Maybe Ross
- is Number One in her book right now. Fletcher thinks
- Roger and Blake set Ross up. Nick says he touched on
- that in the interview, and Ross evaded by saying it was too
- complicated. An assistant comes in and tells Nick
- Haggerty's there for his interview. Nick thinks Haggerty
- is a loser and tells the assistant to tell Haggerty to go
- away. Haggerty comes up behind him and says lots of
- other reporters are interested. Nick agrees to do the
- interview; Fletcher warns Haggerty he's in for a tough
- time.
-
- The Boarding House
-
- Eve says she hasn't thought a lot about what to get for
- Nick. Julie suggests a romantic dinner for two. Eve is
- evasive. She asks Julie what she wants to get from Dylan.
- Julie says jewelry - not something expensive, just
- something she can wear all the time and think of him when
- she looks at it. She moans that she sounds like an
- adolescent. Eve reflects that everyone sounds like an
- adolescent when they're in love; that's why people crave
- it. She tells Julie not to overanalyze her feelings; that
- she'll feel scared and misguided sometimes, but if he's the
- right one she'll be okay. Julie thanks her, and gets up to
- leave, offering to give Eve some stuff to fix her room up
- with. Eve says she's not planning on staying long. Julie
- says it should still be nice to come home to - like with
- Nick. They laugh, and Julie leaves. Eve looks for
- somewhere to hang the mistletoe. Her shoulders slump as
- she takes in the drab room; no wonder Nick doesn't want
- to come back. She has a flash of inspiration; she looks up
- a phone number and picks up the receiver. At the last
- minute, she covers the mouthpiece with a tissue and dials.
- Nadine picks up the phone. Eve pretends to be an old
- friend of Mindy's and asks if she'll be home for
- Christmas. Nadine says probably not, but she'll take a
- message. Eve says no thanks, and hangs up. She's
- embarrassed with herself: "And Julie thinks *she's*
- immature."
-
- At Nadine's
-
- Nadine is still brooding over Bridget. The doorbell rings;
- it's Billy. He says it's cold outside, and reluctantly she
- lets him in. She says he can go over to Vanessa's to light
- a fire. Vanessa can light her own damn fire, he says; I've
- come to take my best girl out to dinner. Nadine softens
- but says she has to wait for Bridget. He says Bridget can
- let herself in and gets her coat. Nadine says she wants to
- leave Bridget a note; Billy goes to bring the car around.
-
- Ed and Maureen's
-
- Bridget is wolfing down food. Maureen tells her to slow
- down; Bridget says she has to get home and cook for
- Nadine and pack. Maureen says at least take off your
- coat. Bridget says she likes wearing it. Maureen says
- Nadine's gone overboard on the gifts. Bridget says this
- one's practical; it'll keep her warm in Appalachia.
- Maureen says she hasn't agreed yet. Bridget feigns
- surprised disappointment; she thought Maureen of all
- people would be glad she was helping someone
- disadvantaged. Maureen says normally she would.
- Bridget says if she doesn't go the professor will flunk her.
- Maureen says she wants to talk to the professor, and goes
- for the phone.
-
- Company
-
- Dylan stops by and finds Julie. They exchange awkward
- words, then apologize. He says he just wanted to show
- off to her. "Pretty immature," she remarks. She goes
- after his shopping bag to see what he got her for
- Christmas.
-
- At WSPR
-
- Haggerty says he's still on the list to succeed Ross as DA,
- but whatever happens he's not the sort of man who goes
- without for long. Without what? Nick asks suggestively.
- Plans, Haggerty replies. Do any of these plans involve
- leaving town? Nick asks. Why would I want to do that?
- Haggerty returns. You're not going to get what you want
- here, Nick tells him. You're wrong there, Haggerty says;
- I'm very persistent. So I hear, Nick says. Kathy in
- Xerox says if you don't stop hitting on her she'll have to
- get a restraining order. Fancy yourself quite the ladies
- man, don't you? Haggerty smiles. I've had my
- successes, he says. To what do you attribute these many
- successes? Nick asks. Short hair and no earring,
- Haggerty replies. Is that all it takes? Nick asks. I don't
- know, Haggerty responds; maybe I should ask Eve how
- she feels. I wouldn't do it tonight, Nick tells him; she's
- busy. Haggerty shrugs; there'll be other nights. They
- stare at each other, the hostility palpable. Anything else?
- Haggerty asks. No, Nick says; I've heard enough from
- you. Haggerty leaves, nodding goodbye to Fletcher, who
- observes to Nick that the interview was like a dogfight. "I
- was exploring the character issue," Nick says defensively.
- Fletcher grins at him. "And I'm the tooth fairy." He asks
- if Nick is getting serious about Eve. Nick says not really;
- he's just curious about how she's changed. Then why go
- out? Fletcher asks. Tonight is just about dinner, Nick
- says.
-
- The Boarding House
-
- Eve is transforming her room with lace tablecloths and
- colorful bed sheets. A bit self-consciously, she puts a
- scented candle on the nightstand. She play-acts the
- beginning of the date and decides to put the mistletoe over
- the door. She smiles up at it in anticipation.
-
- Company
-
- Dylan shows Julie wrapped packages that are for other
- people. They try to outmatch each other, bragging about
- how large the gifts they're giving each other are.
-
- The Towers
-
- Billy asks Nadine what she was doing at Spaulding. She
- says Bridget was there talking to Maureen about Christmas
- plans. Speaking of which, Billy says, what about
- Christmas Eve? Her place, or his?
-
- Fletcher enters and orders a beer from Hamp. Hamp asks
- Fletcher about Ross' resignation and wants to know if he
- and Billy will have business problems.
-
- Nadine says Christmas Eve sounds lovely, and excuses
- herself to call home and see if Bridget is back.
-
- Ed and Maureen's
-
- Bridget tells Maureen Professor Jordan has already gone
- to Appalachia to pave the way. Maureen is shocked she
- didn't check with parents first. Bridget says it was kind of
- last minute. Maureen suspects something else - is she
- having boy trouble? Bridget scowls; boys are the LAST
- thing on her mind. Maureen softens, worried; Bridget has
- changed. She doesn't spend time with her friends. She
- used to be the sort of person who went out and attacked
- the world; now she seems to have withdrawn. When she
- first arrived, she and Maureen fought a lot; Maureen says
- she was scared then, and she's scared now. But she can
- talk to Maureen; she cares. Bridget says it's too late.
- Maureen says it's never too late. Bridget starts to cry and
- falls into Maureen's arms. Maureen accidentally spills
- something on her. They jump up, Maureen waving a
- napkin at Bridget's stomach and Bridget trying to pull
- away. The phone rings; gratefully, Bridget answers it.
- "Oh, Professor Jordan," she says into the phone, and says
- Maureen has some questions. Bridget hands the phone to
- Maureen. Nadine, on the other end, is speechless.
-
- The Towers
-
- Billy approaches Fletcher and Hamp. Billy and Fletcher
- are chilly toward each other. Hamp tells Billy they were
- talking about Ross' affect on business, and Billy says he
- hangs on to what's his. Fletcher says yeah, we know; and
- excuses himself to the deck. Hamp tells Billy to lighten
- up. Billy says Vanessa can see whoever she wants; he's
- sticking by Nadine. Billy has a plan; he'll say great things
- to Gilly about Hamp if Hamp says nice things to Nadine
- about Billy. Hamp says fine, except Nadine is currently
- glued to the phone.
-
- Nadine puts on a French accent and answers all of
- Maureen's questions. When Maureen asks her about the
- music in the background, Nadine says she's at the airport
- and her plane is boarding. She hangs up. "So can I go?"
- Bridget asks. "I really don't know," Maureen says.
-
- The Boarding House
-
- Nick knocks casually on Eve's door. She lets him in; he's
- apologizing for being late, and then catches sight of her in
- her leetle black dress, and is speechless. You look great,
- he tells her. She smiles, pleased. So what do you have
- planned for tonight? she asks. Warm looks are
- exchanged.
