- In a previous article, thom@access.digex.com (The Elf-Lad) says:
- >First, let me disclaim: I earn my living from public television.
- >I manage the station information resources at America's Public Television
- >Stations (APTS), the not-for-profit membership association and lobbying
- >organization for public television.
-
- Aha! Sonmeone on the inside! Let me then address this question to you
- to be discussed in this public forum:
-
- The whole purpose of pledge drives is to get viewers to provide money to
- support the public TV station *because the viewers want to watch the
- programming carried during the stations' regular schedules*. So we
- viewers are asked to send in money to allow the stations to pay the fees
- that let them carry This Old House, Masterpiece Theatre, Nature, etc.
-
- So what do the stations do during pledge drives? *They scrap all this
- programming we want to watch and which we are being asked to support
- and replace it with "specials"!!!!!* To me this is totally insane.
- If the *real* programming isn't good enough to get peoples' attention
- and viewership during pledge drives, why would the station expect
- anyone to pay a pledge?
-
- Secondly, these replacement "specials" seem to me to generally be poorer
- programs than the regular programs they pre-empt. The worst of these
- are those obnoxious multiple-hour-long lectures by this or that
- offensive pop psychologist. Those things should be infomercials, not
- on public TV! Next comes the nth repeat of concerts by singers. (At
- least locally here in St. Louis, the audio is the worst technical aspect of
- our public TV stations, so most musical programming that isn't simulcasted
- on FM is a waste...)
-
- If the pledge drives were merely terms when the stations inserted pledge
- breaks between regular programming, not only would I be more inclined to
- contribute, but the whole process would make more sense. Please
- pass this viewpoint on to your local station management, and up the
- channels to the network, too.
