  23. You are absolutely right.  These comments do seem contradictory.

  25. I guess I was purposefully trying to remain vague because I wasn't
  26. sure where to place the blame.  Despite efforts to find out about the
  27. makeup of the orchestra (Jon Conrad can attest to my questions), I was
  28. unable to determine their show experience (were they show players in
  29. LA, or just stuido cats?).  And though I am also of that camp that
  30. places alot of responsibility on the shoulders of the conductor, I was
  31. hesitant to immediately point to Eric Stern due to his successful
  32. track record in musical theatre, especially since there were many
  33. indications he lived up to his reputation: the coaching of the voices
  34. was impeccable; tempos were wonderful; the orchestra played very
  35. tightly; he followed the singers nicely.  So, since the orchestra was
  36. the bigger unknown to me, I was a little more willing to focus on them
  37. as potentially being the source of the problem.

  39. I must confess, I would have liked to hear Mauceri conduct this
  40. recording, just out of curiosity, to see where the problems really
  41. lay.
