  21. Where did you get the idea that they carried 500 meters of rope?  Rock
  22. climbers routinely carry 50 meter lengths of rope, and still manage to
  23. routinely descend hundreds of meters of cliff.  Perhaps they set up new
  24. anchors every hundred meters or so.
