- I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but my major impression
- from CoC was that there was a huge dearth of new opticals which made the
- whole thing seem like it was a minor project com
- (oops) to the DS9 project (which I guess it was). We got to see the
- Excelsior/Hood veer away from the Enterprise for the millionth time, and
- the Cardassian fleet being conveniently stowed in a nebula from which it
- was never shown to emerge was gimmicky at best. Two-parters on TNG have
- traditionally been (it seems to me) as all-outers in terms of budget,
- guest star interest (Nimoy, Crosby). This one's only unique feature was
- the DS9 tie-in.
-
- Also, the "land mines" didn't make much sense to me, either. And I did
- not appreciate the redress of the 20th century navy buoys which they've
- already used as transporter test objects and other things (I might be
- wrong on this). They don't really have the right shape or structure to
- be something which would latch itself to a ship or make a sizeable
- explosion. Yet again, the episode was unbalanced because of a hurried
- ending, most especially because Picard was instantly back to his old
- sparkly, happy-go-lucky self within minutes. (I was underwhelmed by the
- ending scene with Troi, to say the least.)
