- You're mistaken. A lieutenant commander is not a commander - the two are
- different, distinct ranks, just as commander and captain are two distinct
- ranks. Grammatically, "lieutenant commander" is a two-word noun, not an
- adjective and a noun. Lieutenant commanders are often addressed as
- "Commander" for the sake of expediency; this is true in Starfleet as well
- as today's U.S. Navy (and has an analogous equivalent in the Army, where
- "Lieutenant Colonel" is a step below "Colonel").
