- (stuff about the Sci-Fi channel resurrecting the worst of SF deleted)
-
- My local cable company doesn't yet carry the Sci-Fi Channel, but I've
- been seeing the same ads that promote it as the last word in cable channels,
- while in reality they're dreding up SF trash from the 70's, as stated by
- some users here. Similar things have happened in the past when a new cable
- channel comes along making the same promises as the SF channel. For example,
- a few years ago there was talk of an all-comedy cable channel. That rumor
- materialized as the 'HA' channel' and the 'Comedy Channel'. Here in San
- Antonio we only got the 'HA' channel, and despite all the hype, it was nothing
- more than a vehicle for every obscure crap sitcom from the 70's, even to the
- point of showing series that only had a limted run, so they'd be thru the
- whole cycle of episodes in about a week or two with some shows. A lar,
- even when they orginally aired.
-
- Pardon the tirade, but my point is: A theory myself and a few other people
- cam up with when discussing the situation with the 'HA' channels lineup of
- old trash was that perhaps they were trying to create a cult following
- for these old shows, hoping that no on caught on to how much they really
- sucked. Some old shows have become classics, so I guess they figured they
- could be on the 'cutting edge' of a renewed interest in the absolute
- fertilizer they were showing.
-
- Perhaps the Sci-Fi channel is attempting the same thing. Just a theory.
- (BTW, HA and Comedy Channel merged into Comedy Central about 2 years ago,
- with a greatly improved lineup of original shows).
-
- I'm also thinking that the folks who run the Sci-Fi channel are catering to
- their own stereotyped idea of what Science Fiction fans are like, thinking
- that we all just sit around watching space movies and old Star Trek round
- the clock, rather than real people with discerning tastes in what we consider
- good SF.
-
- Just my $.02 worth on the subject.
