  17. I don't know whether SciFi Channel or USA is using this technology,
  18. but there is equipment available that will allow you to shorten the
  19. running time of an episode without actually cutting anything.

  21. Basically, they just compress the sound and video so that it can
  22. be played in less time (leaving more time for commercials).  Obviously,
  23. in the case of sound, they have to pitch-shift to avoid having the
  24. voices get higher -- remember Alvin and the Chipmunks?
