  10. This note contains the poem "marketta" and an afterword.

  16.     i met marketta at the bigfoot    
  17.         off the freeway in columbus.
  18.         she works the graveyard shift.
  19.         she wears striped white and white-rimmed shades.
  20.         it's too bright in her fluorescent night
  21.         or in her sunny day
  22.         for her arthritic eye.
  23.         she gets headaches.
  24.     
  25.         "how are you doing tonight?"
  26.         "tired... do you have anything other than coffee?"
  27.         "chocolate!  we have chocolate.  let me fix you some."
  28.     
  29.         marketta showed me her slash and burn economy
  30.         a slash and a burn
  31.         from a hot fryer, at 3.35 an hour
  32.         a keepsake for keeps from her previous job.
  33.     
  34.         "i feel like at home, all this lavished attention."
  35.         she smiles.
  36.     
  37.         we talked about the other burns
  38.         burning testimonials, bruises mostly
  39.         paying witness to her stay for free
  40.         at the shelter for battered women
  41.         30 days of asylum
  42.         in the sanctity of unhappy endings and retreaded beginnings.

  44.         "do you get a lot of customers?"
  45.         "not right now, i hope.  it's time for me to hose down
  46.                                 the lot."
  47.         "i noticed!  it smells fresh, what is it?"
  48.         "it's just water..."
  49.     
  50.         marketta is 22
  51.         no health insurance
  52.         mother of a 10-month-old.
  53.     
  54.         "then, he kicked me in the chest!"
  55.         "oh, no..."
  56.         "that was it.  i don't give 'em a second chance."
  57.     
  58.         marketta's first child died
  59.         at 5 months.  crib death.
  60.         then as now, no father around
  61.         to grieve with or pay bills with.
  62.     
  63.         "how do you manage without insurance?"
  64.         "five or ten dollars a week,
  65.          what can they do if you're trying?"
  66.         "hospitals can be vicious."
  67.         "i know, i know."
  68.     
  69.         feeling sorry for marketta?
  70.         i'm sorry if i leave you with this feeling.
  71.         marketta is energetic and nice
  72.         lean of body, small of breast, kentucky-pretty blonde.
  73.         she greets each customer twice
  74.         once on arrival, once on leaving.
  75.         immediate and unsorry she is.
  76.     
  77.         "be sure to tell your sister happy birthday from me,"
  78.         she says as i puncture the glass to resume my night.
  79.     
  80.         what would marketta's life be like if she lived your life?
  81.         hers is not at peace and lacks stability.
  82.         she knows it.  she's working on it.
  83.         like you and i know it.  like you and i are working on it.
