- Acrophobia
-
- Heading down the runway,
- this mammoth bird turns gently
- before lifting wing.
- Lift almost imperceptible
- accompanied by a rush
- of exhilaration as we climb.
-
- But beside me, white-knuckled hand
- clenches the metal armrest
- until I pry it away, and take it in mine.
- Minute dip, and surprisingly strong fingers
- crush my hand,
- as I murmur useless inanities.
-
- The other hand threatens to decapitate
- teddy bear talisman,
- polished fingernails digging into its throat.
-
- No remedy but safe landing,
- eight hours and an ocean away.

- day: for the leaping greenly spirits of the trees
- and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
- which is natural which is infinite which is yes - e.e.cummings
