  14. Heading down the runway,
  15.     this mammoth bird turns gently
  16.         before lifting wing.
  17. Lift almost imperceptible
  18.     accompanied by a rush
  19.         of exhilaration as we climb.
  20.  
  21. But beside me, white-knuckled hand
  22.     clenches the metal armrest
  23.         until I pry it away, and take it in mine.
  24. Minute dip, and surprisingly strong fingers
  25.     crush my hand,
  26.         as I murmur useless inanities.
  27.  
  28. The other hand threatens to decapitate
  29.     teddy bear talisman,
  30.         polished fingernails digging into its throat.

  32. No remedy but safe landing,
  33.     eight hours and an ocean away.
