- A caveat: I've seen The Cook three times in the theater, and
- twice on video. Each time, I've liked it more in some ways and
- less in others. It is a hard movie to get into, because of
- the extreme ugliness. I will say some things in this post
- that I would not have thought of, nor agreed with, after
- seeing it for the first time.

- I think TCTTHSAHL was too sharply filmed to be compared to Dracula.
- Beautiful, yes, but lush?

-
- THIS is what I thought was worthwhile in the movie, besides its
- beautiful cinematography. I can't articulate a coherent view of
- "what it said" but I can feel the underlying logic in the movie.
-
- I have thought of the movie in a couple ways:
-
- 1) A political satire, with Georgina as England's colonies, and
- the Thief as England.
-
- 2) A political satire, with Georgina as Englad, and Thief as the
- ruling class.
-
- 3) An exploration of PG's favorite themes of death, corruption,
- sex and food.
-
- 4) A comment on the violence with which the status quo is maintained
- in our society.
-
- 5) Bunches of other things.
-
- A plus for the movie is its treatment of violence. As everyone here
- has commented, the film was often revolting. I've got a strong
- stomach, and even I squirmed a bit watching the henchmen shove
- paper down Michael's throat with a wooden something.
-
- This is GOOD I think. T2 was filled with violence, NONE of it
- realistic or disturbing. T2, not TCTTHWAHL, promotes poor
- attitudes towards casual violence.
