  19.      Seltzer fits bottle so spray your baby down.
  20.      Floppy shoes fit feet, so wear them
  21.      And the dirty toes they adorn
  22.      Remind you of some clown you once knew
  23.      In some hot tent long ago.
  24.      Familiar as these baggy pants
  25.      That fit like a glove.
  26.      Like the bearded lady coming back for more,
  27.      Curved into the shape of a blimp
  28.      Like they were custom made to do just that.

  32. SHAKES THE CLOWN_ is Bobcat Goldthwait's directing and
  33. acting debut.  It features many of the performers from
  34. stand up tv programs like _Comic Strip Live_ and shows
  35. a twisted view of the life of a clown.  Sort of like
  36. Emmet Kelly meets BARFLY.  These clowns have their own
  37. hangout  called the Twisted Balloon at which they have
  38. their drinks... in costume.  Performers such as Adam
  39. (Opera Man) Sandler from _Saturday Night Live_ never
  40. appear out of makeup.

  42. We see three classes of clowns in SHAKES:  Party
  43. Clowns, Rodeo Clowns and Mimes.  Robin Williams makes
  44. an appearance as Mime Jerry at a school for these
  45. benighted performers.  Mimes are despised by the clowns
  46. and are physically bashed during the course of the
  47. movie.

  49. SHAKES did not receive good notices when it came out.
  50. I rented it as home video *because* nobody liked it.
  51. Anything that a lot of people dislike has probably
  52. touched enough nerves to make it worth seeing.  This is
  53. the case with SHAKES THE CLOWN._

  55. If you take Homey from _In Living Color_ and ratchet
  56. him up about 90 degrees, you'll get a feel for Shakes
  57. who is a known alcoholic and womanizer.

  59. The film will make more sense if you take the following
  60. hint: run the film down to the end and listen to the
  61. song over the credits, then start the film fresh.
  62. Like the commercial says, "You're a grown up.  You
  63. can do anything you want."  SHAKES will make more sense
  64. if you do.

  66. In _Shakes The Clown_, there are bad clowns and *worse*
  67. clowns.  The character Binky has landed a hosting job
  68. of a children's cartoon show over Shakes and commits
  69. several crimes through the course of the story.

  71. There is a lot of crude humor in the film and it works.
  72. If you are open to that sort of thing, you'll have many
  73. good yucks.

  75. Like the underground classic _Killer Clowns From Outer
  76. Space_ (get it if you can find it!) _Shakes The Clown_
  77. is not appropriate for young viewers.  It _is_
  78. appropriate for anyone who was ever frightened of a
  79. clown as child and lifts the mystery from behind the
  80. makeup. But with all of his drinking and womanizing,
  81. Shakes is still a bit super human and magical in his
  82. ability to jump and spin as no ordinary man could do.

  84. I recommend _Shakes The Clown_.  Bobcat Goldthwait has
  85. taken a chance with this film that may make or
  86. ultimately break his career as a director.  That's the
  87. fate of people who take chances.
