- Summary: What did the ending mean?

- I just finished watching the movie Radio-Flyer. Not only was this
- movie not at all what I thought it was going to be, I was left feeling
- cheated of a well resolved ending. I can think of three ways to interpret
- the end, listed below. What I would really like to know is what the
- author of the script meant for me to get from the ending. If anyone
- has any insight into the true intentions of the author, please let me know.

- My thoughts:
-
- 1) There was only one child in the family! Mike and Bobby are one in the
- same child, with Mike having assigned his treatment to a separate
- personality. This would explain Mike's freedom from abuse, Older-Mike
- being the owner of Sampson the turtle and the symbolism of his having
- his "brother" wear his jacket on his flight.
-
- 2) Bobby died and was never found in the crash. To keep his promise to
- Bobby to take care of their mother, Mike has sent postcards to his mother
- ever since. Hence the burden of a promise.
-
- 3) The story teller is Bobby, masquerading as Mike these many years later.
- That's why the story teller has Sampson the turtle that left with him
- on the flight.
