- about Deniro's imperfections giving him some credit for
- Taxi Driver and Raging Bull and GF partII ; none for Goodfellas;

- De Niro is THE premier actor from the past 10-20 years.
- His performances are always better than the material he
- is given and he plays it to the max without hamming it up.
- A close second is Jack Nicholsen, but De Niro is in a class
- with the all time greats. Others who are quite good in the same time
- but just miss this level are Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Sean
- Connery, Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino, Anthony Hopkins, Alec Guinness.
- I do not believe that playing in Shakespears works has
- relavance in today's world. All of us (at least in the USA) are
- exposed to Shakespears work in school and must admire him and be
- astonished that his work has stood up for as many years as it has,
- but, playing a gangster has much more relavance that playing
- Falstaff in modern times. Playing Jake La Motta has more meaning
- than Hamlet IMHO.
-
- As for knocking a person for having a regional(NYC) accent, I think
- your predjudice is showing through. Having an accent is hardly reason
- for knocking an actor(unless it takes away from his performance, and I
- think that artists like DeNiro and Meryl Streep do a large amount of
- prep work for any role) . We enjoy Sean Connery , Alec Guiness,
- Gerald depardieu, Anthony Hopkins and many other fine continental
- , and British actors who have strong native accents and are never
- cited for this imperfection.
