- MC>The "Making Of" was called "Hearts of Darkness", and wasn't even nominated fo
- MC>an Oscar. It SHOULD have been - one of my favorite films.
-
- I don't know the dirty secrets of the Academy, but I think one reason
- why HEARTS OF DARKNESS awasn't nominated for an Oscar was because it
- was a MADE-FOR-TV movie. It was broadcast on cable months before it
- was released to theaters - I taped it off of Showtime myself.
-
- The Academy has a long-standing rule that a production must be
- released to theaters FIRST in order to qualify for an Oscar. For this
- reason, Sweden was forced to withdraw THE BEST INTENTIONS (with its
- screenplay by Ingmar Bergman) from the competition for the Best
- Foreign Film Oscar. At the same time the movie was released to
- theaters over there, a longer version of the film played on TV as a
- miniseries. So the movie was disqualified.
-
- This rule is probably a product of the anti-television opinions of
- Hollywood back in the fifties.
