  15. I don't know the dirty secrets of the Academy, but I think one reason
  16. why HEARTS OF DARKNESS awasn't nominated for an Oscar was because it
  17. was a MADE-FOR-TV movie.  It was broadcast on cable months before it
  18. was released to theaters - I taped it off of Showtime myself.

  20. The Academy has a long-standing rule that a production must be
  21. released to theaters FIRST in order to qualify for an Oscar.  For this
  22. reason, Sweden was forced to withdraw THE BEST INTENTIONS (with its
  23. screenplay by Ingmar Bergman) from the competition for the Best
  24. Foreign Film Oscar.  At the same time the movie was released to
  25. theaters over there, a longer version of the film played on TV as a
  26. miniseries.  So the movie was disqualified.

  28. This rule is probably a product of the anti-television opinions of
  29. Hollywood back in the fifties.
