- The work you're reffering to is CONTINUITY, and it involves recording the
- scene by scene details so EVERYONE knows what happened two days ago (most
- movies are shot out of sequence).
-
- Each department has their own continuity system: WARDROBE, MAKE-UP, CAMERA,
- SOUND -- all try to keep "within" continuity so the clothes, make-up, lighting,
- and audio match as closely as possible. Each department keep this in order with
- polaroids (primarily), although I have seen the "script-person" handle a video
- camera.
-
- in other words it's not ALL left to one person. The ploblem is that this is
- never perfect. Read "PREMIERE" MAGAZINE for a list of continuity errors (on a
- monthly basis!) in recent Features.
-
- The video-tape is called "video-assist" and is used primarily to let the
- director see the shot "in progress". The assist comes off the camera and can be
- recorded to any format. If your friend said "beta" he probably means "BETA-SP"
- a proffesional format. The video assist CAN be used for continuity, but is
- usually there to review "takes". Then the Director can take it home at night
- and cut a "video-rough edit" to see if the scene is working the way it should
- be.
-
- Sorry, it's BETACAM-SP, but the format could be VHS, 3/4, or even ONE INCH if
- you're stupid enough to rent the equiptment. I've only ever seen VHS, but I
- predict the next series of video-assists will be Hi-8, either in Camera or by
- wire-less feed.
-
- The video-assist is also used by soud-recordists to help in mic. placement, and
- to keep a "perspective" on the sound that will match the shot.
