- I'm sure this movie has been discussed to death, but, not wanting to
- know how it came out, I studiously avoided reading any of the posts.
- Given Roger Ebert's rave review, I was expecting something at least halfway
- decent, but my major reaction was, I must admit, laughter. Not at the
- events, certainly, the Kennedy assassinations are as tragic as anything that's
- happened to this country in the last thirty years, but when King Laugh comes,
- I doubt him not. The bad Louisiana accents, maybe, Costner's limning of
- Garrison conflating in my mind with Chris Elliott's "The Conspiracy Guy",
- I don't know. I started to lose it after the second or third time
- Costner rushed off after seeing a televised assassination screaming "See! I
- told you so!" I was surprised Stone didn't work in the Trilateral Commission
- or the Illumnati. Some of the logic the characters used also was hilariously
- warped: "Since when does the mob use anything but a .38 up close?" was
- particularly notable. The massive dosage of cameo appearances
- had me feeling like I was watching one of those 1970's disaster movies.
- John *Candy*, for Chrissakes? "Triangulated cross-fire, that's the key."
- I had a big problem with the three planted shell casing argument -how
- would the shooters know how many shots could be accounted for -
- that of the six shots "fired", hard evidence would exist for only three?
-
- I'm taking no position on whether or not a conspiracy existed, I just
- didn't find many of the arguments Stone used very convincing. For the
- record, though, John Connelly only reported hearing three shots, and said
- he never heard the shot which hit him (which would be consistent with a
- delayed reaction). Heck, Ronald Reagan didn't know *he'd* been shot (at
- first, although he figured it out eventually).
-
- So please enlighten me, if you can, as to the substantial merits of this
- film. I'd hate to think I missed something. I did like the use of
- different media, although I was never sure whether what I was watching
- was actual footage, or a skillful fake.
