  20. Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard have gotten excellent reviews in 
  21. "Passion Fish", a John Sayles film that's been released in LA for
  22. Academy Award consideration.  The young woman who played the lead role
  23. in "One False Move" hasn't got the press campaign to manage it, but
  24. did receive many excellent reviews in a film widely admired within the
  25. industry and by critics.  If the small releasing company had the funds
  26. to mount a campaign, the year's field is small enough to still give her
  27. a good chance.  Earlier, Whoopi Goldberg was being talked about for
  28. "Sister Act" - pure filler for the category, of course.  I don't remember
  29. how the rules concerning foreign films work on this issue, but I think
  30. that Gong Li is eligible for an acting award this year for "Raise the
  31. Red Lantern", despite that film contending in the Best Foreign Language
  32. Film category last year.  It didn't actually play in LA till this calendar
  33. year, I believe.

  35. Miranda Richardson can pretty much count on being nominated at least once,
  36. and possibly twice, in the supporting actress category, for "The Crying
  37. Game", "Enchanted April", "Damage", or two of the three.  They might even
  38. elevate her "Enchanted April" performance into a best actress nomination,
  39. given the thinness of the field, since her part was certainly as big
  40. as anyone's in that film.
