-
- Mary McDonnell and Alfre Woodard have gotten excellent reviews in
- "Passion Fish", a John Sayles film that's been released in LA for
- Academy Award consideration. The young woman who played the lead role
- in "One False Move" hasn't got the press campaign to manage it, but
- did receive many excellent reviews in a film widely admired within the
- industry and by critics. If the small releasing company had the funds
- to mount a campaign, the year's field is small enough to still give her
- a good chance. Earlier, Whoopi Goldberg was being talked about for
- "Sister Act" - pure filler for the category, of course. I don't remember
- how the rules concerning foreign films work on this issue, but I think
- that Gong Li is eligible for an acting award this year for "Raise the
- Red Lantern", despite that film contending in the Best Foreign Language
- Film category last year. It didn't actually play in LA till this calendar
- year, I believe.
-
- Miranda Richardson can pretty much count on being nominated at least once,
- and possibly twice, in the supporting actress category, for "The Crying
- Game", "Enchanted April", "Damage", or two of the three. They might even
- elevate her "Enchanted April" performance into a best actress nomination,
- given the thinness of the field, since her part was certainly as big
- as anyone's in that film.
