- The Dark Horse "Version 1.1" has appeared at Million Year Picnic. I
- picked up my copy and read it last night. Gome, i didn't write
- down the name of the artist and author and dare not try to type from
- memory.
-
- This is a detective story, tracking down a missing scientist from a
- super secret lab who walked off with the really dangerous artificial
- intelligence they had built. It also attempts sporadically to be
- humorous, not completely without success but somehow somewhat
- predictably. I didn't like the story telling style. It is based on
- "explain it to the reader" rather than "show it to the participants".
- There's lots of lecturing at video screens to fill in our hapless
- private eye.
-
- The characters seem a bit bland. The detective is supposed to be
- humorous, possibly like in City Hunter, but without the same
- cleverness. Also no need to swipe underware, but that's the only
- improvement. The other main character is the daughter of the missing
- scientist. She seems to be sleepwalking through looking for her
- father, but if anyone wakes her up, watch out! I get the feeling she
- could get quite competent and engaging in a hurry. Hmm, wonder if
- she's actually the "bad guy"? Nah, couldn't be...
-
- The actual art is kind of nice. The style is slightly "cartoonish"
- rather than "realistic", which fits the story well. The claim in the
- Dark Horse written intro is that the artist is a master at screen
- tone. I dunno, Ranma 1/2 seems about as imaginative there, and this
- artist is no Manabe Johji. But the lines are very clean, the panels
- flow really well (someone here will no doubt point out that they flow
- better un-reversed, but hey, i gets my manga as i can...) None of the
- US four-up even sized panels and no full page splashes except at the
- title pages. I'm not sure how well motion will work out; so far the
- story has been static enough that there has been no need for a stretch
- of panels showing continuous action. The reproduction seems better
- than in Orion, though Shirou-san's work is much more imaginative,
- making up for the mediocre printing.
-
- Yes, this is the standard $2.50 DHP price for the standard size of
- book. Not cost effective if you read Japanese and can get the
- original, but OK for the entertainment i got. The story doesn't grab
- me the way Raika or Ragnarok Guy did, the art is not something i will
- pull out of my boxes to review down the road. Not a bad buy, not on
- the top of my list either.
