- In all three of the latest Disney animated films (Little Mermaid, BaTB,
- and Aladdin) my question is 'Where are the mothers?' Neither Ariel, Belle,
- or Jasmine are shown to have mothers. Where are they? What is Disney trying
- to say about family structure and father/mother(less)/child relationships?
- My first quick impression would be that the position of motherhood and a
- mother's role in the family is 'belittled' by its non-inclusion. Though
- another thought that comes to mind would be that since the main characters
- are female (Ariel, Belle, Jasmine) there sometimes exists more 'conflict'
- between daughters and their fathers (especially teenage years) and Disney
- is trying to concentrate on this part of the family scene. Though I think
- Disney should have included a proper role for the mother in these films.
- (actually someone correct me but I don't remember Ariel having a mom, or at
- least her mom's role in the movie was VERY limited, been a long time since
- I saw it.....) Any other opinions?
