  26. Some years ago, my wife had a job in which she was supposed to
  27. give away an encyclopedia.  We cannot remember which one it was,
  28. but it was not Britannica, Americana, World Book nor even Funk
  29. and Wagnalls.  The idea was to seed the neighborhoods, and get
  30. the neighbors to decide they wanted one, too.

  32. In any case, Joan met with scant success.  The most common line
  33. was "I don't want my kids wasting time reading books; they should
  34. be out playing football, where they belong".

  37. Someyears after that, we were visited by a Britannica salesman.
  38. His main selling point seemed to be the "research service", in
  39. which for a "nominal" fee, the Britannica staff would write a
  40. term paper, to specification.  We wouldn't want to deprive our
  41. children to be of this service, now, would we?  He wasn't very
  42. happy when I told him that we liked doing our own research, we
  43. would make sure our kids, if and when we have them, are capable
  44. of doing their own research, and that using such services for
  45. schoolwork was illegal in this state.
