- Some years ago, my wife had a job in which she was supposed to
- give away an encyclopedia. We cannot remember which one it was,
- but it was not Britannica, Americana, World Book nor even Funk
- and Wagnalls. The idea was to seed the neighborhoods, and get
- the neighbors to decide they wanted one, too.
-
- In any case, Joan met with scant success. The most common line
- was "I don't want my kids wasting time reading books; they should
- be out playing football, where they belong".
-
-
- Someyears after that, we were visited by a Britannica salesman.
- His main selling point seemed to be the "research service", in
- which for a "nominal" fee, the Britannica staff would write a
- term paper, to specification. We wouldn't want to deprive our
- children to be of this service, now, would we? He wasn't very
- happy when I told him that we liked doing our own research, we
- would make sure our kids, if and when we have them, are capable
- of doing their own research, and that using such services for
- schoolwork was illegal in this state.
