  24. Many people compare Ed McBain's police procedurals to the Sjowall/Wahloo
  25. books. Me, I like McBain, but I believe that much more planning went into
  26. the Swedish novels, which were conceived and executed as a 10-book series.
  27. I strongly recommend that they be read in chronological order, starting
  28. with ROSEANNA. Those who want to sample McBain's 87th Precinct novels can
  29. do no better than to start with ICE.

  31. For readers who like to follow the growth of a character over the course
  32. of several crime/mystery novels, I recommend Robert Parker's first 12
  33. Spenser books, beginning with THE GODWULF MANUSCRIPT and ending in
  34. VALEDICTION. (The books after VALEDICTION, which marks a natural
  35. conclusion to the series, show a significant drop in quality.)
