- I recommend Lewis B. Patten, who wrote many books from the fifties to the
- late seventies. I think he died sometime in the early eighties, and since
- then his books have become hard to find in new book stores, though they're
- widely available in used ones. He had a terse, gritty writing style, and
- definitely presented an unromantic view of the West. Three favorites of
- mine are "Death of a Gunfighter," "Bones of the Buffalo" and "Red Sabbath,"
- about the Battle of the Little Big Horn. All of these are pretty damn
- depressing (i.e., good ;->).
