  14. I'm gonna be makin' a trek up to NYC for the Matisse exhibit in
  15. early January, and I'd very much like to bone up before I go.
  16. So, I could use some help in my efforts to _chasser_les_fauves_,
  17. as it were :-)--that is, some recommendations for good books on
  18. the subject.  Given the source of the suggestion, the Elderfield
  19. sounds like a good start (could you say a bit more about it, Keith?).
  20. I'm especially interested in books with more words than pictures--
  21. those that emphasize art criticism and art history with a special
  22. focus on Matisse and his influences/followers.  I'd prefer things
  23. that are easy to find and also in paperback, but rare or expensive
  24. recommendations are also OK, since I've planned my trip so as to
  25. spend the whole pre-Matisse day in the New York Public Library,
  26. browsing through whatever I hadn't already been able to find/read.
  27. (Which brings up another question: is there another library in NY with
  28. a better collection in the area of art history and art crit?  The
  29. NYPL is such a cool building, I wouldn't miss it for the world,
  30. but it never hurts to have alternatives...)  Thanks!
