- Don't know of any books (good or otherwise) directly on point, but do
- recall that in "The Fatal Shore," which was supposed to be quite well
- researched, it was mentioned that the reason the Brits had to start
- using Australia as a dumping ground for the unfortunate was because
- they could no longer use the American colonies (they having proclaimed
- their independence). Of course, they didn't think of them as being
- unfortunate, but as having "inherited criminal tendencies," as I
- understand it. But being descended from some of these same folk, I
- think of it as early ethnic cleansing.
-
- Now, what we *really* need is some sort of national database which would
- allow us to have on-line access to all the dust-covered PhD dissertations.
- Undoubtedly many obscure items like this have been painstakingly researched
- by someone seeking their sheepskin in history, or social work, or something
- else relevant, if we just know how to search for them :-)
