  25. A "garage kit" is usually produced by an individual person or small number
  26. of people in a garage or other home workshop, as opposed to the
  27. manufacturing plants of Ban-Dai and Hasegawa and the like. Garage kits are
  28. hand made, and can not be mass produced, thus the higher initial retail
  29. prices. Garage kits are sometimes popular because a big company won't
  30. produce a line of a particular model, or the quality/detailing of a
  31. particular model is really bad.

  37. It's a combination of import tarriffs, middlemen trying to get as much
  38. money out of ignorant store owners as possible, and store owners trying to
  39. get as much money out of ignorant fans as possible. It's pretty much a case
  40. of sellers charging as much as the market will pay.
