- This past weekend I ran across a rather unusual piece of Rookwood that had
- a few oddities I haven't really run across before.
-
- The piece was a very large (about 26") 2-piece oil lamp. The base was
- about 8" across, then tapered up to about a 2.5" neck on which an almost
- round piece sat. The whole thing was standard glaze with a very pretty
- decoration of a wild rose that twined around the entire base and then
- spread out across the round piece at the top. Unfortunately, at some
- point in its life, it had been electrified. The burner apparatus was
- gone, though the brass piece that would have held the oil was there;
- this brass piece and the base had had a hole drilled through it.. presumably
- for the electric cord.
-
- The mark was the "normal" Rookwood one, with two flames (1887).
-
- Now the odd stuff:
- There was no shape number. I was more or less under the impression
- that pretty much everything done at Rookwood, even experimental
- shapes, was recorded in the shape book and the number stamped on
- each and every piece.
-
- There was no artist's mark. I realize that they don't ALL have
- them, but it seems odd that such a large and beautiful piece
- from this era wouldn't have one.
-
- Anyway.... anyone seen anything like this piece before? I've been collecting
- for quite some time and haven't seen anything even remotely similar...
- not even in any of the auction catalogs. Any ideas what it might be worth?
- The base piece was in perfect condition (other than the hold drilled in it)
- while the top globular piece had to rather small hairlines and one rim
- chip that was hidden by the brass fittings.
-
- As slightly related asides, I've heard rumor that the same place that held
- the Glover auction a few years back was going to have another rather large
- Rookwood auction in 1993. Anyone else heard anything about this?
- Also, I've been fascinated by the shape book and the few pages of it that
- I've seen reproduced in various books. Does it still exist? Who has it?
- Can one get access? Has it ever been reproduced in its entirety?
