- The MIGHTY NUGGETS let one get away to Portland, as they led the majority
- of the game, but a furious comeback was just a bit short. With Portland
- missing Kevin Duckworth and Jerome Kersey, the Nuggs should have taken
- advantage of their inside strength, but failed to do so.
-
- Denver had an excellent first quarter, with Mark Macon getting his first
- start of the year (so he could defend Clyde Drexler). Macon's offense was
- great, he let the game come to him rather than forcing the action, and his
- defense on Drexler was tough -- Macon slapped the ball away quite a bit and
- forced Drexler to take tough shots. But Portland had narrowed the lead to
- 3pts by the half.
-
- The game was tight until the 4th quarter, when Portland pulled away to leads
- as big as 9pts. Denver chopped into that with 3 3ptrs from Reggie Williams,
- the last with about 35sec left to get within one at 99-100. The Nuggs got
- the ball back with 11sec to go, but Rod Strickland and Terry Porter made a
- good defensive play on Chris Jackson, forcing a loose ball that became a
- jump ball between Strickland and LaPhonso Ellis. Ellis won the tip, but
- CJ couldn't handle it and that was it.
-
- Denver never took full advantage of Duckworth's absence, as Mutombo faced
- Buck Williams and Mark Bryant down low. LaPhonso Ellis played well, looking
- strong on the boards. But the difference was Portland's guard play, with
- Drexler/Porter/Strickland getting 68pts.
