- IJCAI93 Workshop on
- Reuse of designs: an interdisciplinary cognitive approach
-
- Chambery, France, August 28 or 29, 1993
- (previous to the main IJCAI93 conference,
- August 30 to September 3, 1993)
-
- Call for papers
-
- The interest of reusing "old" particular solutions (cases) in problem-
- solving tasks has, in recent years, led to proposals for systems
- based on case-based reasoning (CBR). This workshop focuses on
- two aspects of reuse: - its interest for non-routine design tasks in
- which a human designer and an intelligent artificial system
- collaborate, and - the need to consider data on cognitive activities
- involved in these tasks so that the assistance system can be made
- compatible with the human information processing system.
- An important aspect of expertise in non-routine design is the
- construction, organization and exploitation of a memory based on
- previous experience with particular design problems (case
- memory). As psychological studies show that even experts have
- difficulty in accessing the case(s) relevant for solving a new
- problem, proposing cases is one of the main assistance functions
- that should be provided by CBR-based tools. In addition, a critical
- component in such systems might assist designers in evaluating the
- relevance and suitability of proposed cases.
- The workshop will focus on the following topics:
- - AI approaches to reuse in design, especially CBR, prototype-
- based reasoning, redesign and mixed paradigms
- - cognitive modeling of cases, their organization in a case memory,
- and their exploitation (indexing and retrieval)
- - empirical data on cognitive aspects of reuse in design activities
- - methods for the acquisition of knowledge on reusable design
- components (cases)
- - specification and evaluation of design assistance CBR-based
- tools: their "cognitive status", i.e. the consequences which data on
- cognitive activities have for these tools.
-
- Workshop format. This one-day, closed workshop will be limited to
- 30 participants who have made submissions.
- Persons wishing to present a communication at the workshop
- should submit the full length version of their paper (about 5-10,000
- words). Other persons wishing to attend the workshop should
- submit a short position paper (about 1000 words) specifying why
- their contribution to the workshop would be of interest (based on the
- research they have been conducting in the domain).
-
- Proposed schedule. The goal of the workshop is to have a
- roundtable format rather than a speaker / audience format. Some
- seven communications of half an hour are planned, in order to have
- discussion times of about 15 minutes for each paper. Papers on a
- same theme may be grouped together to be discussed in a same,
- longer discussion session.
-
- Submission. Five hard copies of submissions must be received by
- February 28, 1993. They should take one of the two following forms:
- - full length version of papers to be presented as communications at
- the workshop (about 5-10,000 words)
- - short position papers to justify attendance (about 1000 words) (no
- presentation at the workshop).
- The first page of each paper should contain the paper title, author's
- name, postal address, fax number and email address. The second
- page should contain the paper title and abstract without any author
- identification. Papers will be refereed and authors of accepted
- papers will be given the opportunity to revise their papers prior to
- the final submission.
-
- Selection. Papers are invited to focus on the topics enumerated
- above. Each paper will be evaluated by three members of an
- international panel of referees. Preference will be given to papers
- establishing a link between an AI and a cognitive-psychology
- approach: these papers will be most likely to be selected for
- presentation.
-
- Publication. Proceedings containing the texts of the accepted
- papers will be available at the Workshop. Depending on the results
- of the workshop, publication of (a selected set of) papers in the form
- of a special issue of a journal may be taken into consideration.
-
- Dead-lines
- - February 28, 1993: Five hard copies of submissions must be
- received by this date.
- - May 3, 1993: Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent to
- the first author.
- - June 15, 1993: Three hard copies of the final revised, formatted
- versions in the form of camera ready copies of accepted papers
- must be received by this date.
-
- Practical information
- The application should be accompanied by the following
- information:
- - Full name
- - Institutional affiliation
- - Postal address (to which correspondence should be sent)
- - Position
- - Main field of specialization
- - email
- - telephone
- - fax
-
- Costs & Conditions of participation. Each workshop attendee must
- have registered for the main conference. The fee of the workshop
- are an additional 300 FF (about 60 $).
- The organizers of the IJCAI93 main conference asks the workshop
- organizers to insist on the following:
- "No attendance to a workshop will be accepted without registration
- to IJCAI93. This will be checked seriously!"
