  31. To design complex technological systems and to
  32. analyze complex biological and cognitive systems,
  33. we need a multilevel methodology which combines a
  34. coarse-grain analysis of  cooperative or
  35. distributed computation (we shall refer to the
  36. computing agents at this level as "schemas") with a
  37. fine-grain model of flexible, adaptive computation
  38. (for which neural networks provide a powerful
  39. general paradigm).  Schemas provide  a language for
  40. distributed artificial intelligence, perceptual
  41. robotics, cognitive modeling, and brain theory
  42. which is "in the style of the brain", but at a
  43. relatively high level of abstraction relative to
  44. neural networks.

  46. The proposed workshop will provide a 2-hour
  47. introductory tutorial and problem statement by
  48. Michael Arbib, and sessions in which an invited
  49. paper will be followed by several contributed
  50. papers,  selected from those submitted in response
  51. to this call for papers.  Preference will be given
  52. to papers which present practical examples of,
  53. theory of, and/or methodology for the design and
  54. analysis of complex systems in which the overall
  55. specification or analysis is conducted in terms of
  56. schemas, and where some but not necessarily all of
  57. the schemas are implemented in neural networks.

  60. follows, where a hybrid approach means one in which
  61. the abstract schema level is integrated with neural
  62. or other lower level models:

  85. a five-page extended abstract,  including figures
  86. with informative captions and full references

  95. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be
  96. sent by email no later than March 1, 1993.  There
  97. are currently no plans to issue a formal
  98. proceedings of full papers, but revised versions of
  99. accepted abstracts received prior to April 1, 1993
  100. will be collected with the full text of the
  101. Tutorial in a CNE Technical Report which will be
  102. made available to registrants at the start of the
  103. meeting.   [A useful way to structure such an
  104. abstract is in short numbered sections, where each
  105. section presents (in a small type face!) the
  106. material corresponding to one transparency/slide in
  107. a verbal presentation.  This will make it  easy for
  108. an audience to take notes if they have a copy of
  109. the abstract at your presentation.]

  117. double room costs $75/night.  Workshop participants

  123. abstracts, coffee breaks, and a dinner to be held
  124. on the evening of April 13th.
