  14. The job description below is for a position at the NAS facility at NASA Ames
  15. Research Center in northern California working for Computer Sciences
  16. Corporation (CSC).  CSC is currently one of the largest NASA contractors for
  17. Information Technology Support Services.  The NAS project aids researchers
  18. in the solution of computational problems in aerodynamics and fluid
  19. dynamics.  The NAS project also provides leadership in advanced large-scale
  20. computer systems capabilities through the incorporation of state-of-the-art
  21. improvements in computer hardware and software technologies.

  23. Member Technical Staff - Specialist
  24. Distributed Systems Support
  25.  
  26. GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
  27.  
  28.     Distributed systems support will encompass the support of and 
  29.     resolution of problems in common software products that exist 
  30.     on multiple architectures (Crays, Convex mainframes, Sun and SGI 
  31.     workstations).  Examples of common software products include: X11 
  32.     window system, GNU software (gcc, g++, emacs), Perl, and TeX.

  34. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  35.  
  36.     - Test and install common software packages across multiple
  37.       architectures.
  38.      
  39.     - Maintain and support common software packages across multiple
  40.       architectures.
  41.  
  42.     - Provide second level user support for questions and problems 
  43.       concerning common software.
  44.  
  45.     - Monitor appropriate net news groups for updates and patches to 
  46.       software installed on NAS systems. Implement all appropriate updates 
  47.       and patches.
  48.  
  49.     - Develop tools to automate the software management and review
  50.       process.
  51.  
  52.     - Make recommendations on which software tools/packages should be
  53.       added or removed from the NAS environment.
  54.  
  55. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  56.     
  57.     - U.S. Citizenship is required.
  58.  
  59.     - An intermediate level of  knowledge of C and shell programming 
  60.       languages, with a good understanding of Makefiles.
  61.     
  62.     - An intermediate level of knowledge of UNIX. 
  63.  
  64.     - Familiarity with at least three of the software packages listed above.  
  65.     - Good interpersonal skills enabling interaction with customers and
  66.       technical staff of various skill levels.
  67.  
  68.     - The ability to work independently, formulate procedures, and
  69.       manage priorities with assigned responsibilities.
  70.  
  71.     - A B.S./B.A. in Computer Science or associated discipline and one
  72.       to two years experience in a UNIX support environment with multiple
  73.       architectures, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
