- The job description below is for a position at the NAS facility at NASA Ames
- Research Center in northern California working for Computer Sciences
- Corporation (CSC). CSC is currently one of the largest NASA contractors for
- Information Technology Support Services. The NAS project aids researchers
- in the solution of computational problems in aerodynamics and fluid
- dynamics. The NAS project also provides leadership in advanced large-scale
- computer systems capabilities through the incorporation of state-of-the-art
- improvements in computer hardware and software technologies.

- Distributed Systems Support

- GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
-
- Distributed systems support will encompass the support of and
- resolution of problems in common software products that exist
- on multiple architectures (Crays, Convex mainframes, Sun and SGI
- workstations). Examples of common software products include: X11
- window system, GNU software (gcc, g++, emacs), Perl, and TeX.

- PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
-
- - Test and install common software packages across multiple
- architectures.
-
- - Maintain and support common software packages across multiple
- architectures.
-
- - Provide second level user support for questions and problems
- concerning common software.
-
- - Monitor appropriate net news groups for updates and patches to
- software installed on NAS systems. Implement all appropriate updates
- and patches.

- - Develop tools to automate the software management and review
- process.
-
- - Make recommendations on which software tools/packages should be
- added or removed from the NAS environment.

- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-
- - U.S. Citizenship is required.
-
- - An intermediate level of knowledge of C and shell programming
- languages, with a good understanding of Makefiles.
-
- - An intermediate level of knowledge of UNIX.
-
- - Familiarity with at least three of the software packages listed above.
- - Good interpersonal skills enabling interaction with customers and
- technical staff of various skill levels.

- - The ability to work independently, formulate procedures, and
- manage priorities with assigned responsibilities.

- - A B.S./B.A. in Computer Science or associated discipline and one
- to two years experience in a UNIX support environment with multiple
- architectures, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
