The Western Region of American President Lines, Ltd. is seeking qualified candidates to fill positions in Seattle Washington, Oakland California and San Pedro California as Telecommunications/Lan Administrators
Position Purpose:
To provide first level support to all APL employees in the Western Region in the areas of Telecommunications, Local Area Networks, pcs and mainframe hardware.
Position Summary:
As part of the Information Resources Team in the Western Region, the Lan Administrator will provide front line support in maintaining and expanding the telecommunications and computer systems infrastructure of APL for the Pacific Central District. Respon
sibilities will include maintaining, trouble shooting and maintenance of an SNA mainframe network, Rolm 8000 or 9000 phone switch, Appleshare and Novell Netware file servers, Localtalk and Ethernet multiprotocol local area networks, simple pc/macintosh ma
intenance and repair.
This position may require some on call after-hours work.
The ideal candidate will have some experience in phone system maintenance, basic telecommunications, data communications in either pc or mainframe environments. Experience with windows pcs and macintosh is desirable. BS/CS, BS Business (MIS) or equivale
nt.
Must be available to begin work January 1993.
Position Accountabilities:
1. Support of IBM mainframe printers, terminals, cluster controllers, T1 equipment at detailed direction of the Regional Information Resources Manager, APL Help Desk and Network Control Center.
2. Support of Lan wiring hubs, routers, bridges, pc's/macintosh, servers and other equipment at the detailed direction of the Regional Information Resources Manager, APL Help Desk, Network Control Center or Telecom Projects Group. Maintain detailed docu
mentation of all systems installed including trouble logs, configuration , routine backups, etc.
3. Act as vendor contact for all repairs of telecom and computer hardware. Maintain trouble logs and follow escalation procedures.
4. Support Rolm phone system by maintaining trunking records, local phone bill reviews, performing routine software MAC's and managing all hardware and software MAC's. Monitor phone system utilization and performance. Act as point of contact for all re
pairs and trouble reporting.
5. Other duties as assigned.
Decision Making Authority:
Authorized to purchase miscellaneous parts for repair and maintenance of various electronic equipment to a limit of $500, up to $5000 with the approval.
Provide input and guidance in the selection of vendors for pc/telecom support.
Required Approvals:
Up to $500 without approval
Up to $5000 with the approval of the Western Region IR Manager
Up to $10,000 with the approval of the Western Region Managing Vice President.
Specific Types of Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:
Prior experience in telephone system administration, voice mail system administration, basic telecommunications.
Overview understanding of the equipment installed in the Pacific Central Region, its basic function and how it is connected.
Prior experience with MS DOS PC's operating in a Novell Netware environment, experience with Apple Macintosh operating in an Appleshare environment, Certified Netware Engineer a plus.
Ability to interact positively with customers in a demanding work environment. Must be able to follow policies and procedures carefully. Good spoken and written communications skills are a must.
BS in Computer Science, Business (MIS), Engineering or equivalent experience required.
