- Are you implying that non-homeopathic approaches are lacking
- individuation of medicine or treatment?
-
- The point I was trying to make in my posting is that homeopaths do not
- think that one homeopathic medicine will help everyone having a
- certain disease, such as AIDS. Instead they believe that the medicine
- must be chosen according to the symptoms the patient has. Homeopathic
- physicians believe that each patient has a single best medicine and
- try to find that medicine.
-
- The individuation of the medicine according to the symptoms of the
- patient gives the homeopathic physician a procedure for choosing a
- single medicine that is not present in other systems of medicines. For
- example, a herbalist knows that many herbs are sedatives, but has no
- hard rule for deciding which herb to prescribe for insomnia.
- Similarly, an allopathic physician distinguishes between sinus and
- migraine headaches and will prescribe different medicines for each. To
- this extent allopathy practices individuation of medicine. But there
- are several different medicines that can be used to treat migraines
- and the allopathic physician has no hard and fast rule to choose one
- over the other. So he or she usually tries one after another until one
- works. In contrast, a homeopath will ask the patient suffering from
- migraines a series of questions such as: "when does the headache
- occur?", "which side is it on?", "is there nausea?", "are there visual
- disturbances?", and choose a homeopathic medicine based on the
- answers. Thus the individuation of the prescription is finer in
- homeopathy than in allopathy or other systems of medicine.
-
- All of this does not show that homeopathy is a better medical system
- than others, of course. That is determined by the speed and
- effectiveness of the treatment and the absence of side effects. No
- system of medicine is best for all problems and no system of medicine
- cures all of its patients. A good physician will refer his or her
- patient to a practitioner of another system when it is in the best
- interest of the patient.
