  12. People complain that alternative medicine is not scientifically sound, is not 
  13. verified etc..

  15. Well, the fact is that neither is much of modern medicine. Treatments are 
  16. tested on large groups with careful controls. But every test depends completely
  17. on a key assumption. Yes, it is that all other things are equal, yes the famed 
  18. ceteris paribus. There are so many different things that effect health that you
  19. never know whether your experimental treatment is a cause or somethinbg else 
  20. is. The human body is so complicated that all scientific studies on it have 
  21. serious validity problems. ( I won't even start on social sciences, a far more 
  22. complex matter) I'm coming on too strongly, with good samples and good controls
  23. and very careful observation, scientific tests can be valuable, but theyare not
  24. the end all answer we are lead to believe.

  26. There is an even greater confounding factor. If someone is sick, and you do 
  27. NOTHING. In time, much more often than not, they will get well on their own. 
  28. People tend to get well. Therefore scientific studies tend to show that 
  29. treatments work. MOre importantly this leads people to believe that any 
  30. alternative treatment works as well. We could move onward to the placebo 
  31. effect...

  33. The medical industry is oriented towards trearting symptoms with drugs. It
  34. brings quick responses, it makes them money and it keeps the customer pretty
  35. happy. We as consumers need to realize that the best treatment is prevention
  36. and let medical professionals help us choose a heal;thy lifestyle and wise
  37. prevention. Alternative medicine enlists the patient and makes him care about
  38. his health all the time, not just when he is sick. this is the power of it.

  40. When science catches up and runs all the tests it will reveal similar things
  41. about alternative medicinbe, just like what it revealed about modern medicine
  42. before.
