- For the past 7 years, I've been doing a daily 30 minute ride on
- an exercise bike at a pulse rate of 160-170. I was overweight when
- I started and did it for that reason plus the cardiac benefits.
- I noticed an improvement in my stamina within a week or two, but
- the most noticible change was my leg muscles. They developed rapidly
- and I first noticed the improvement within a month. Over the
- course of 4 months I lost about 40 pounds of fat (my overall
- weight didn't change as much due to the increase in muscle). I
- was being careful about my diet, as well, so exercise wasn't
- solely responsible. I don't know what my resting pulse rate was
- when I started, but these days it centers around 50. I think
- that's the best measure of how much you're improving. I'm
- still not svelte, but I credit exercise with allowing me to not
- have to devote large amounts of attention to how much I eat.
-
- A tip I've found handy for keeping me with the regimen: I post
- a good-size calendar where it's noticable each day. Every day
- that I ride, I put an 'X' on the day. If I miss, the gap is
- very guilt-inducing. Conversely, a month that is totally
- 'X'ed out is a source of great satisfaction.
