- -Getting down to 4% body fat can be very unhealthy. It is important to
- -realize that the kidneys are surronded by fat for protection. Eliminating
- -this fat effectively reduces protection of the kidneys. At 4% body fat
- -I seriously doubt the fat protecting the kidneys is not affected. Marvin
- -Haglar, a remarkable athlete and tremendous boxer, was never less than
- -8% body fat. If you want to see the perfect example of muscle tone and
- -low body fat, look at this individual. I think many would agree, based on
- -this individual's example, that dropping below 8% is probably overkill.
-
-
- Your concerns are well founded but, fat makes a poor protection device.
- Marvelous Marvin Hagler's well developed back muscles were much better
- protection for his kidneys than was his bodyfat. The back muscles and
- the two lower ribs are the body's natural protection for your kidneys;
- not fatty tissue. Also, since the kidneys are located within the abdominal
- cavity, the core temperature of the body will keep them warm. If you
- have to worry about your kidneys getting too cold because you lack the
- proper amount of body fat, you have a more serious problem than too low
- a percentage of body fat. And, the primary reason for fat being stored
- around the kidneys is because the body likes an economy of size. That is,
- there is naturally extra room around the kidneys so the body uses that
- space to store the excess baggage. It really has only little to do with
- protection or warmth. At least that's my estimation of things. I might
- have a hard time proving this in a medical journal, but specialists and
- other healthcare people are looking into the role of fat and how we should
- be viewing it. Fat is necesary for warmth and some protection, I would
- like to argue at what point that role ends and excess begins.
-
- I believe the healthiest way to go is to try and keep your
- overall percentage of bodyfat down around 7-10% maximum.
