- I live in Cambridge, bike theft capitol of the world. I always buy a
- used 10-speed (actually they are all 12-speeds these days) and I
- deliberately let it get scuffed up. When possible, I chain it, with a
- large lock, next to the shiniest bike I can find.
- There are some FAQ's about bikes in the rec.bicycles hierarchy so
- let's not go into tech, but it does help to buy a decent bike. My
- current bike is heavy and a bit awkwards, and it does discourage me
- from attempting longer trips. A new bike in the spring, if my knees
- heal!
