  14. I live in Cambridge, bike theft capitol of the world. I always buy a
  15. used 10-speed (actually they are all 12-speeds these days) and I
  16. deliberately let it get scuffed up. When possible, I chain it, with a
  17. large lock, next to the shiniest bike I can find. 
  18.   There are some FAQ's about bikes in the rec.bicycles hierarchy so
  19. let's not go into tech, but it does help to buy a decent bike. My
  20. current bike is heavy and a bit awkwards, and it does discourage me
  21. from attempting longer trips. A new bike in the spring, if my knees
  22. heal!
