- The Christmas Day fire in the business district of Matewan, W.VA gutted
- four buildings and left eight families homeless. The fire and
- explosion
- severely damaged about one quarter of the business district and
- destroyed
- the homes of families living over storefronts.
-
- Then Saturday, four fires, apparently the work of an arsonist, erupted
- in the already-damaged area. State Fire Marshall Paul Ritchie
- remarked,
- "It appears all four were started by the same individual within minutes
- of each other." One was set at this historic mining town's fire
- station,
- and other were at a bank, a tavern, and a parked truck.
-
- Police Sunday arrested a long-haul truck driver as a suspect in the
- four
- Saturday fires.
