- Far be it from me to second guess Dr. Carl Sagan, but Cosmos was
- written over 12 years ago, and a lot of information has come out since then.
- It has been descovered that life on earth actually began only 500 million
- years after conditions were right for it. Many suggest (indeed, insists)
- that this means life on this planet was inevitable, which would suggest that
- if there are any planets with similar conditions (and the likelyhood is
- extremely high that there are many), then life must be inevitable on those
- planets, as well. Dr. Stephen Jay Gould (Panda's Thumb, Ever Since Darwin),
- who is, among other things, an evolutionary biologist (Sagan is an
- astronomer), has adopted this theory.
