  13. The FreeLore project is an initiative to create 
  14. a large quantity of educational material that can
  15. be distributed without cost.  
  16.  
  17. We need volunteers to create the material and to
  18. review it.  
  19.  
  20. This project is of great interest to the k12.* 
  21. hierarchy.  However, I can't figure out how to
  22. post a general announcement to your group.  Would
  23. someone please contact me and tell me where you
  24. normally post such things.

  33. FreeLore is useful information that is stored in
  34. electronic or magnetic media and has a copyright
  35. similar to that of GNU software.  FreeLore is not
  36. a proprietary name or product, but an idea.  In
  37. essence, it is the generalization of GNU software
  38. to any kind of useful information.

  40. You are hereby cordially invited to join the FreeLore
  41. Project as a charter member.  
  42.  
  43. The provisional purpose of the FreeLore Project is
  44. to organize volunteers to:
  45.  
  46. -- promote and encourage the production of free
  47. educational and other useful materials
  48. (``FreeLore'') in the electronic and
  49. electronically-derived print media;
  50.  
  51. -- to define standards for FreeLore;
  52.  
  53. -- to promote active discussion of issues facing
  54. the producers of FreeLore;
  55.  
  56. -- to capture and enhance (markup) public-domain data for
  57. inclusion in FreeLore;
  58.  
  59. -- to provide information to persons interested in
  60. using or writing FreeLore;
  61.  
  62. -- to promote efficient use of networks as a means of
  63. providing access to FreeLore;
  64.  
  65. -- to organize and provide support services such
  66. as archiving, markup, cataloguing,
  67. self-registration of (self-)published materials,
  68. and software maintenance;
  69.  
  70. -- to promote cataloguing standards for FreeLore;
  71.  
  72. -- to encourage electronic-media as the primary media
  73. of scholarly discussion and journal publication;
  74.  
  75. -- to create copylefted or public-domain software for
  76. creating, accessing, and viewing FreeLore;

  78. -- to promote freedom of access to information in
  79. whatever form generally.

  81. Our first task will be to work out a real charter and
  82. an agenda.  Discussion will be mostly by email, and
  83. not necessarily conducted in alt.uu.future.
