- Dear Paul MacFarlane,
-
- These are very interesting observations:
-
- -> As for myself, I really enjoyed it ten years ago as a new teacher,
- -> and one who had never been particularly assertive in life. As time
- -> has gone on, though, I've discarded a lot of its point of view in
- -> favor of a more problem-solving approach, encouraging students to
- -> reason out why they should adhere (or in some cases, IF they should
- -> adhere) to particular social norms. I also noticed that I myself
- -> have become much more assertive
-
- And it seems to ring true to me. I guess I myself am fairly assertive,
- and never really had discipline problems in the classroom, even as a new
- teacher. So I thought that the Assertive Discipline program was a little
- silly, and felt that I was already doing quite a few of those things in
- my classroom already, and that I didn't want to do the others. But for
- new teachers who are very unsure about how to handle discipline, I think
- that it does offer a very good starting point, and a way to handle
- discipline with more confidence until you grow into your own style.
-
- Very well put.
