- I don't have any specific knowledge of late model mustangs, but I would guess
- that your car has some type of seat/seat-belt safety interlock.

- Do you usually HAVE TO buckle up before your car will start? Or perhaps the
- car is designed not to start without a driver in the left side seat (!)

- If any of this is true, you may have disabled this interlock by
- accident. The next
- course of action would be to get under the seat (might need to remove
- seat) and
- try to reverse the damage. The cap may be part of a switch or part of a
- plug.
- From your description, I would guess a switch and it sounds wrecked!

- If you can get to a Ford dealer, they may have a new switch on the shelf
- and you
- will be home free. It should also be possible to bypass (hot-wire) the
- switch, but since
- there are 3 wires, the arrangement is not obvious....
