  21. A few remarks on your question:

  23. -  Having your 486 (either running UNIX or MS-DOS) act as
  24.    X server is possible. For UNIX this is obvious, for
  25.    MS-DOS (and also for MS-Windows) are commercial products
  26.    available. I believe that the products of Hummingbird
  27.    are considered to be one of the best.
  28.  
  29. -  You need then some networking protocol on your serial line.
  30.    SLIP (Serial Line IP) is the most commonly known solution,
  31.    PPP is another possibility.
  32.  
  33. -  NCD has developed a special protocol for dealing with the
  34.    X protocol on serial lines. It includes compression techniques,
  35.    I believe. Of course, NCD has included this software in their
  36.    X-terminal-software, and for the X-client-side (e.g. UNIX-server)
  37.    you can buy the software.
  38.    I think NCD has contributed Xremote to the X consortium, and it
  39.    might be included in X11R6. Maybe someone else can comment on this.

  41. -  I don't know how SLIP/PPP and modems with good compression techniques
  42.    (V.42bis) relate to Xremote w.r.t. performance. Any comments?
