- For months now, I have been hearing stories about SunSoft and the
- INTERACTIVE UNIX System. It seemed that as soon as Solaris would be
- available for the Intel platform Sunsoft was going to get rid of
- the product they acquired from ISC. It does not look that way. I just
- got a box, labeled Preview Kit and in it are two diskettes and some
- documentation. The documentation explains that there will be a brand
- new release of the product in the spring of 1993, called 4.0,
- but that they did not want customers to wait until then for
- certain features and that is why they came out with these 2 diskettes.
- This package cost me $75.
-
- Reading on I found that the two disks really contain all the stuff
- that we were all complaining about. They finally did long file
- names and symbolic links, interval timer, and a Korn shell that supports
- job control and the second disk has support for up to 256Mb of memory on
- an ISA box (I couldn't try that, my machine only has 8).
- So it looks like the folks at SunSoft decided to get serious about
- this product. After all, from what I hear Solaris will not run on all
- machines so it looks there is still a place for that product.
-
- I also received an envelop labeled Maintenance Update. It contains
- a disk with bugfixes (and a Boot disk for 2.88Mb floppy drives). The notes
- that come with it claim this is now shipped with new product
- and they will do a new one every three months. That sounds
- a lot better than the "I am sorry Sir, but this will be fixed
- in the next release" approach. Looks like the customer counts
- again!
